This Wife represents not just one woman. Wahunsenacawh had 7 known children. The mother of only 1 of those children is known. We do not know the names of the mothers of the other 6 children with any certainty. Except for Tatacoope, whose mother was Oholasc, the names of the mothers of these other children are not found in any known records and most are not known in any oral histories. The Patawomeck Tribe believe the mother of Pocahontas and Cleopatra was Winganuske, who is a known wife of Wahunsenacawh. Therefore, these children are attached here to one unknown wife and mother, most likely they were half-siblings sharing only their father but since we do not know…..By attaching them to one unknown mother at least all of Powhatan's known children can be easily found. Mamanatowick Wahunsonacock Powhatan also known as Paramount Chief Powhatan is thought to have had as many as 100 wives and at least 32 children. He reigned over many tribes, some conquered in war, some inherited. He would take wives from the many tribes and once a child was born to them, the woman was free to return to her tribe and take a new husband. In this way the tribes were connected not just through politics but by blood relationships. Because of this it is thought that the majority of his children were 1/2 siblings. Now while the names of some of his children were recorded, as well as the names of some of his wives, it is not known which wife is the mother of which child, the only mother child relationship recorded is Oholasc who is known to be the mother of Tatacoope. It is known that Winganuske did have a child fathered by Powhatan but the sex and name of that child were not recorded. Therefore in the absence of a known mother it is simpler to attach all the known children to one "Unknown" Powhatan mother There is already a record for Winganuske and 12 other known wives of Powhatan; IT IS NOT KNOWN WHICH WOMAN IS THE MOTHER OF WHICH CHILD/CHILDREN (Not ALL of them anyway) FOR WINGANUSKE SEE LTB1-B18 |
