William K. Stewart was the son of Alexander Stewart II and Mary Cowan. William came with the family to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1758 from Ireland. William was one of at least six sons born to this family, his siblings were John, Samuel, Alexander, Joseph, and Archibald.
On May 5th, 1769 William received a grant for land from King George III for 300 acres of land on Millstone Branch between the Wakhaw and Twelve Mile Creeks in South Carolina. This land was on the east side of the Catawaba River.

It appears that William may have been married twice
first wife Sarah Calhoun and she is mother of Samuel.
Hopefully DNA will be able to place the other children with the correct

William married Jane "Jennet" Martin around 1776 in South Carolina, children from this marriage: Frances, Elizabeth and Robert.
William and his family lived in York County, South Carolina until after the death of his wife Jane Jennet Martin, in 1805. Shortly after her death a large number of families moved out of the York area.
The Stewart Brothers divided and went separate ways. One group went to Georgia settling in the Morgan County area and later in Cherokee County, Alabama, while another group went to Ohio.
Motive for the family's move was division amount the Presbyterians of York and Lancaster districts, S. C. on the question of slavery.

William was a Revolutionary War soldier and served as a Pvt. in Captain Felix Worley's Company of the 3rd Regiment of the South Carolina Scouts, commanded by Colonel William L. Thompson.

he manners of the departed were original. Possessed of a mind naturally strong and persevering: it was by his own industry well cultivated. (For he was self educated.) His deportment conformed to the earlier customs of the country. Plain in dress, and unassuming in his manners, he made no pretensions to show. His temper was humane and benevolent. In the management of his affairs, he was exact and economical. His energy of character insured success in most of his undertakings.
